Rev Theory – Hell Yeah
This song was released on 15 March 2008, apparently. Rev Theory sounds like a hybrid of Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, and Iron Maiden (not to mention a host of other lesser-known eighties glam-rock bands).
The chorus lyrics are a little simplistic, but simply pretend the tattooed frontman is a cheerleader and you’ll be fine. Special mention to the vocals and guitars. And full points to the band for managing to pull off the long-haired rocker look while still looking very much 21st-century cool.
Hurray!

This is the kind of music I love and no longer get to listen enough of. This is rock music from an age gone by, from guys who are nearing the peak of their powers.
For some reason, I remember them as Daniel Radcliffe’s favourite band (just one of the many wonderful, pointless things that Rolling Stone magazine comes up with). Shit, I thought at the time, they’re probably a bunch of punk-rock, foul-mouthed, hipsters that rich kids listen to.
Look at them, though. They look (and sound like) like stock brokers on holiday – intelligent, hooky and having fun. They’re old guys holding their own in a twisted, fickle industry, and you can’t but love them. It’s in their earnest lack of style that they are most stylish. It gives me hope. And it just made Harry Potter a whole lot cooler.
The Hold Steady – Sequestered in Memphis [mp3]
The Hold Steady – Joke About Jamaica [mp3] (my new favourite song)
The Hold Steady – Lord, I’m Discouraged [mp3]
The Hold Steady – Stay Positive [mp3]
Uff, I really love year-ending Top 40 pop music.
In particular, today:
(1) Live Your Life – Rihanna feat. TI
(2) Dangerous – Kardinal Offishall
(3) Hot n Cold – Katy Perry
(4) With Every Heartbeat – Robyn
(5) Human – The Killers
(6) Run – Leona Lewis
That last one is growing on me fast. The lady can really sing: when I first heard the song I thought it was Mariah Carey covering Snow Patrol, not Leona.
Whether you like this sort of music or not, whether you watch The X Factor (I don’t) or even know what it is (a British talent show similar to Pop/American Idol), whether you like what Leona’s wearing or not (I think her legs look hot, although the rear peacock-type skirt-thing would have been much better replaced by a pair of black wings or some such), I think this vocal performance deserves special mention. Best left to buffer for a bit and listened to while continuing to do whatever it is you were doing.
Leona Lewis – “Run” – X Factor, 15 November 2008
PS: Snow? What snow?
